my ideas of improving well-being

During times like these, sometimes you find your mental health slipping. It is easy to get lost in confusion, disappointment, and frustration and can lead yourself into a dark place. It is important to take care of yourself during times of stress. Here are some ideas that i do to improve my well-being.

Get creative!
It is important to keep yourself occupied and stimulated. Now is the time to become inspired and let your thoughts run wild! Everyones idea of creativity is different. You could write stories/poems, create/play music, draw, color, or paint! Recently, i painted a terra-cotta pot and planted succulents (which is something i wouldn't typically do). I also enjoy coloring inside coloring books while listening to music.

Go outside!
This one is extremely important. A lot of times when you are surrounded by the same things, you get a case of cabin fever. Go outside and get some fresh air and vitamin D! I have found that spending at least 20 minutes outside does a lot for well-being.

Take care of something!
For me, taking care of animals (and now plants) is a big motivator for me to get out of bed and be productive. You can try gardening, spending time with pets or looking after family members.

Catch up on new shows/ movies!
I have spent my quarantine religiously watching nature documentaries and old shows haven't seen in awhile. Sometimes watching movies or t.v shows is a good way to pass time, reminisce, and stimulate your brain. Here are some of the shows/ movies i have been enjoying:

  • Sea of Hope (National Geographic documentary)
  • Sharks of Lost Island (National Geographic documentary)
  • Blackfish (i've seen this a million times)
  • Anything Disney or Pixar
  • Looking for Alaska (amazing book by John Green and is now a show on Hulu)
  • Bob's Burgers
  • Paradise P.D

Read!
Stimulate your brain! Here are some of my favorite books:

  • Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
  • The cellar by Natasha Preston
  • The Blessings of the Animals by Katrina Kittle
  • Looking for Alaska by John Green
  • Pillow Thoughts by Courtney Peppernell
Listen to music!
Music is something very important to me and many people. Music represents many emotions and tells different stories and connects to people in different ways. I listen to a variety of genres of music (ranging from country to rock to rap) and my favorite songs change all of the time, but here are some of my current favorites:
  • High by 5 Seconds of Summer
  • I HATE EVERYBODY by Halsey
  • Mother's Daughter by Miley Cyrus
  • Die For Me by Post Malone (feat. Future & Halsey)
  • I Think I Luv Her by Tyla Yaweh
  • Never Needed No Help by Lil Baby
  • Indica Badu by Logic (feat. Wiz Khalifa)
Surround yourself with your favorite people (if possible)!!
For me, this is probably the most important. Whether it is in person or virtual, keeping in touch with the important people in your life makes the hard times seem okay.

  1. Angelica,

Throughout the course of this semester, I have admired your incredible passion and drive, and I believe this is certainly evident in your blog post. Each of the things you shared have attributes which make them unique and personal to yourself. I especially love that coloring book and its title!

Thank you for exposing me to such strong perspectives throughout the semester. I found your individual values project to have an extreme impact on me, as your passion against environmental and animal injustices were profound. I now strive to contribute to these causes in a similar fashion to how you have, and I am grateful that you were able to expose them to me.
